Bromine Recovery Plant

Bromine being a highly reactive material, finds wide applications in many Chemical Industries like, Organic Intermediates, Dyestuffs, Agrochemical, Fire retardants etc.

Bromine can be recovered from:

  • Industrial Bromides (NaBr, KBr, HBr.)
  • Bittern

Aqueous Bromide solution is reacted with chlorine vapour in reaction column. The Chlorine liberates elemental bromine from the dissolved bromide. This is stripped out by live steam feed from the bottom of column.

Crude bromine is then distilled to get Bromine purity of minimum 99.5%. The solution is not always so simple though, as feeds are often containmated with organic material from process. These organic impurities have to be removed by pre-treatment before feeding to the plant.

Typical plant consists of stripping column, Heat Exchangers Phase Separator, Purification Column collection pot, Reboiler, Scrubber with associated Glass Piping and Fittings. All wefted components are made from Borosilicate glass and PTFE which are corrosion resistant even at elevated temperature.

Sulphuric Acid Dilution Unit

The dilution chamber illustrated in figure has the capability of diluting acid of any concentration to produce sulfuric acid of any desired concentration.

The system consists of Dilution Chamber, Heat Exchanger, Receiver & Circulation of dilute acid Pump (Optional) with associated Glass Pipelines, Valves & Fittings.

Dilution Chambers is used for diluting concentrated Sulphuric acid to the desired concentration and the Heat Exchanger is used for bringing down the temperature of dilute acid to desired temperature (When the concentrated acid mixed with water, large amounts of heat are released. ) The Heat Exchanger is either of Shell and Tube type or Coil Type. The acid should be added slowly to cold water to limit the buildup of heat.

Gas Absorber - Adiabatic Type

Hydrogen Chloride is very soluble in water but it's absorption is complicated by the high heat of solution and the high partial pressure over warm concentrated solutions. In practice, the basic problem in making concentrated solutions is one of efficient heat removal. In this type of absorber, the heat of absorption is removed by evaporation of water and acid in the column. The vapour being condensed is diluted with 'makeup' therefore mostly removed via condenser. Concentration and cooling of the liquid phase is assisted by evaporation of water to maintain the vapour/liquid equilibrium in the lower part of the packed section.

The arrangement of the absorber is common to all sizes in the range. The gas is introduced into the column at a point below the packed section and rises counter current to a down comer stream of acid.

'Makeup' water enters above the condenser and in ert gases are vented from the head of the column. The hot concentrated products is passed through an acid cooler before flowing to a storage tank.

Gas Absorber - Falling Film Type

Hydrogen chloride feed gas is being allowed to enter from the inlet provided on the upper end of ABSORBER. This gas falls down along with the water inside the vertical parallel glass tubes. This arrangement provides more effective absorption as cooling of dilute acid and absorption of hydrogen chloride gas are taking place simultaneously. It has got more solubility in water at lower temperature. In this way ABSORBER work as a number of water cooled wetted wall columns in parallel.

The basic principle involved is falling film absorption which have:

Ability to absorb large loadings of gas flow.
Capacity to produce strong acid with minimum vent losses. Since absorption is effected at a low temperature.

ABSORBER consists of a vertical Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger incorporating economical design considerations. Compactness and light weight are the additional features.
